Toyota Estima Review

Estima (in Japan) is also known as Tarago (in Australia), and Previa. Multipurpose or MPV vehicle (North American’s called it as minivan. It was in production from 1990 to 2019.

The name is derived from the Italian and Spanish terms for ‘preview’. As per Toyota, Previa is the car that would preview certain technologies that would be used in the future minivans.

After the premium Vellfire/Alphard, Previa along with Sienna is the second largest minivan of the Toyota family. Available in either 4 door or 5 door options Inspired by MasterAce Surf (R20/R30)/TownAce.

The First Generation of Estima was in production amid 1991-1997 (North America), 1990-1999 (International). The 1990 model is known as XR10/XR20. Available as Front mid-engine as four-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive layout.

It is loaded with a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmission box.  If we talk about the engine then it has 2.4 L gasoline (even with supercharged variant) and 2.2 L turbocharged diesel

The first generation models are common in Australia, United Kingdom, Netherlands, and United States. 2865 mm of wheelbase. Height ranges from (1745-1791mm), width (1801 mm & 1798 mm), and length (4750 mm & 4760 mm).

Coming to the Second Generation model i.e. 2000 XR30/XR40. It was a new front-wheel drive model with a bit shorter wheelbase i.e. of 2900 mm as compared to the first generation.

Additionally, the height and width of this vehicle is smaller i.e. 1770 mm and 1790 mm respectively. The model is now inspired by Camry platform and built on FF layout.

It was in production during 2000-2005 and comes with Front wheel drive with front-engine. Engine displacement ranges from 2.0 L to 3.0 L in both turbocharged diesel and gasoline options.

CVT (hybrid), 4-speed automatic, and 5-speed manual. Sliding doors on both sides for the rear passengers. 2900 mm wheelbase. Height, Width, and Length of 1770 mm, 1790 mm, and 4750 mm respectively. In Japan, Estima is available in hybrid and a V6 engine of 3 liter In 2001, a hybrid version of the Estima was also gone into production that uses two electric motors and a Hybrid Synergy Drive of Toyota. The front wheels are powered by an electric motor of 13kW(17 hp) and a gasoline engine of 2.4 liter. An 18kW(24 hp) of electric motor is used to propel the rear wheels.

The third Generation of this model was known as Tarago in Australia, Estima in Japan, and Previa in other countries. It is also recognized by XR50, and introduced in 2006. Production happened in between 2006-2019.

It is available either as Front-engine four wheel drive or front wheel drive options with front engine on both kind of models. The engine displacement is available as either 2.4 L (hybrid or gasoline) or 3.5 L (gasoline).

Overall dimentions of this generation of Estima vehicles are 1750 mm, 1800/1820 mm, and 4795/4820 mm in terms of their Height, Widtth, and Length respectively. Wheelbase is of 2950 mm. Transmission options can be 4/6 speed automatic and 7-speed Super CVT-i.

There are many features included in it are Hybrid Synergy Drive drivetrain (in Japan); Lane-Keep Assist (LKA) system to detect the lane markers of a road and keep the car on the right (only in Estima), automatic reverse and parallel parking (execlusive for Toyota Estima), Adaptive front-lighting system having low beam headlamps to help the clear vision of the upcoming road especially on bends, power-folding split seats on the third row (only on seven seater models), and track-mounted reclining seats including footrests in the second row.

In 2009, a minor update of the model was released. V6 variants were exclusively having Dynamic Radar Cruise Contro and Lane Keeping Assist kind of active driver assist features. Toyota had also added G-BOOK as optional feature.

Toyota was also launched a hybrid version of its third-generation Estima exclusively to the Hong Kong and Japanese markets. The model was having all-wheel drive function with 2.4 L E-Four hybrid system of Toyota. It resembles much similarity with crossover SUV Lexus RX 400h.

In mid-2016, the facelift version of Estima was launched with only some additions to the list of their features without changing the dimensions. It includes an infotainment display having large touchscreen well housed in a center console with piano black finish and a redesigned steering wheel with multi-functionality.

For the Japanese models, the facelift versions of the Estima included ‘Toyota Safety Sense C” as the very new safety system in any of their vehicles. Also, it was featuring updated steering wheel design, 99% UV cut glass (recommended by Skin Cancer Foundation), bumpers, taillights, LED DRLs and slightly designed headlights. Estima hydrid only proceeds with 2.4 L inline 4 that generates 224 Nm (165 ft.lbf) of torque and 170PS (130 kW) of power.
